The low level of awareness of historical gardens and parks in the Baltic region among experts in Germany and Western Europe contrasts with the large number of garden and park ensembles in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Although numerous individual studies exist (mostly in national languages), links to Western European scholarship are only weakly developed. Scientific exchange within the Baltic States also needs to be intensified, and connections to garden art in Russia and Poland should be critically examined. Our cooperative event on the art and cultural history of gardens and parks in the Baltic region (Turaida/Riga, 14–17 September 2019, with a second event in 2020 in Bad Homburg) aims to address these gaps and strengthen mutual perception and academic cooperation through a multilateral exchange of experts from art and cultural history, landscape planning, garden architecture and heritage conservation. The conference focuses on the multi-perspective and interdisciplinary research and description of the garden cultural heritage in the Baltic region and on the question of its interactions and entanglements with developments in Western Europe since the late 18th century.
