About Us

Who we are
The Böckler-Mare-Balticum Foundation is a nonprofit foundation under civil law, established by architect Dr. Erich Böckler and his wife Lisbeth. Its purpose is to ‘promote scholarship and research in the field of artistic culture in the Baltic Sea region, particularly in the Baltic countries.’ (Statutes)

What we do
The foundation is dedicated to researching and promoting the art and cultural history of the Baltic States with a particular focus on Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. To foster academic exchange, it organizes conferences with field trips (so-called (Homburg Talks) and workshops. Every year, we award the Lisbeth and Erich Böckler Scholarship, which supports the development of young scholars, language acquisition, and networking. The foundation grants funding twice a year, for example for scholarly publications (printing subsidies), research projects, and conferences (travel and accommodation costs), and subsidizes exhibitions and collection cataloging if these contribute to the realization of the foundation’s purpose. Since 2017, the foundation has been publishing its own academic book series, the Edition Mare Balticum.

In addition to these grants, the Foundation is also operationally active and carries out its own projects. Since December 2017, the DEHIO Portal and the DEHIO Handbook of Art Monuments in the Baltic Countries have been in preparation in collaboration with partners and with generous financial support from BKM, ZEIT Foundation Bucerius and Gerda Henkel Foundation.

In addition, since 2021 we have been organizing workshops, conferences, and academic research projects focused on the foundation’s founders and exploring various perspectives on the history of the Foundation. A catalog raisonné of the buildings designed by architect Erich Böckler is currently being compiled, with publication scheduled for spring 2027 on the digital platform for art history and art studies – “arthistoricum.net” – Specialist Information Service for Art, Photography, and Design.
